HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CAMDEN YARDS?

4/7/2017 12:00:00 AM

Baseball season is here and everyone in Maryland is cheering for the Baltimore Orioles! Whether you’re an opening day fanatic or a casual fan, some of these Camden Yards facts might surprise you. How much do you know about Camden Yards?

THE FIRST GAMES

The lease for the ballpark was originally signed on May 8, 1988, by Governor William Donald Schaefer. Construction began in the winter of 1990 after the previous stadium was demolished. The official new name, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, was announced on October 3, 1991—the night before the final home series at Memorial Stadium. The first pitch was thrown by the Baltimore Orioles pitcher Rick Sutcliffe at 3:20 PM on April 6, 1992. The Baltimore Orioles won their first game in the stadium and Sutcliffe pitched a complete-game shutout.

CAMDEN YARDS FACTS

Compared to other similar baseball stadiums, Camden Yards was a bargain. Today, billions of dollars are invested into making stadiums and Camden Yards was built for a mere $110 million. While the current capacity is less than when Camden Yards opened, the starting capacity held an amazing 48,041 people.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES FEATS

According to the Baltimore Orioles, there have been a whopping 138,000 plate appearances at Camden Yards. Out of all of those, only 79 ended with a Eutaw Street home run. The first Eutaw Street home run was hit on April 20, 1992, by Mickey Tettleton. The first Baltimore Orioles player to hit a Eutaw Street home run was Kevin Bass on June 8, 1995. Chris Davis, the Baltimore Orioles first baseman and outfielder, has launched a shot for a Eutaw Street home run an amazing (and a record) eight times.
